Gold guide
The karat number tells you how much pure gold is in the metal: 9k is 37.5% gold, 14k is 58.5% and 18k is 75%. Higher karats have a richer colour and higher value; lower karats are harder and more affordable. White, yellow and rose gold differ only in the metals mixed with the gold.

Frequently asked questions
Is 9k gold real gold?
Yes. 9k gold is solid gold alloy containing 37.5% pure gold. It is durable and the most affordable karat, popular across the UK and Europe.
Is 14k or 18k gold better for an engagement ring?
Both are excellent. 14k (58.5% gold) is harder-wearing for everyday rings; 18k (75% gold) has a richer colour and higher gold value. Choose 18k for prestige and colour, 14k for durability.
What is the difference between white, yellow and rose gold?
All three contain the same amount of pure gold for a given karat. Yellow gold is alloyed with metals such as silver and copper, rose gold gets its pink tone from a higher share of copper, and white gold is alloyed with white metals for a silvery colour.
Will solid gold tarnish?
Solid gold does not rust or tarnish the way silver does. Clean it occasionally with warm water, mild soap and a soft brush.
