Jewellery care guide
Put jewellery on last and take it off first: after perfume, hairspray and make-up, and before swimming, the gym or cleaning. Wipe it with a soft cloth after wearing, clean it in warm soapy water with a soft brush, and store each piece separately, away from sunlight and moisture.
Everyday habits
- Protect jewellery from scratches, knocks, harsh chemicals, extreme temperatures and direct sunlight.
- Put it on after perfume, hairspray, lotion and make-up.
- Take it off for swimming, hot tubs, the gym, gardening and household cleaning.
Sterling silver & gold-plated jewellery
Basic cleaning
Wipe each piece with a soft microfibre cloth after wearing. You can dampen the cloth with a little warm water.
Deep cleaning
- Soak the piece for 5–10 minutes in lukewarm water with a drop of mild, non-moisturising soap or washing-up liquid.
- Brush gently with a soft toothbrush or make-up brush.
- Rinse in clean water and pat dry with a soft microfibre cloth.
What to avoid
Don’t use silver polishing cloths or polishing compounds on plated pieces: their chemicals can strip the rhodium or gold plating. Keep pieces away from ink, hairspray, perfume, nail polish remover and chlorine. More tips: how to clean sterling silver at home.
Solid gold & diamond jewellery
Solid gold doesn’t tarnish, and diamonds are the hardest natural material, but both pick up skin oils and soap, which dull the sparkle.
- Soak in warm water with a few drops of mild washing-up liquid for 15–20 minutes.
- Brush gently behind and around the diamond with a soft toothbrush, where grease collects.
- Rinse under warm running water (with the plug in) and dry with a lint-free cloth.
Avoid bleach and chlorine, which can weaken gold. Even diamonds can chip from a hard knock, so take rings off for heavy work. Have the prongs of rings and studs checked by a jeweller once a year so stones stay secure.
Pearls
Pearls are soft and delicate. Avoid wearing pearl rings and bracelets for manual tasks, keep them away from household cleaners, perfume, lotions, cosmetics, chlorine and hair products, and wipe them with a soft, slightly damp cloth.
Storage & travel
- Store jewellery somewhere dry, out of direct sunlight and away from big temperature changes.
- Keep pieces separate so they can’t scratch each other. A small bag or pouch for each is ideal.
- When travelling, use a jewellery pouch or roll so pieces aren’t scratched or tangled.

Questions
How do I clean sterling silver jewellery at home?+
Wipe it with a soft microfibre cloth after wearing. For a deeper clean, soak it for 5–10 minutes in lukewarm water with a drop of mild washing-up liquid, brush gently with a soft toothbrush, rinse and pat dry.
How do I clean a diamond ring?+
Soak it in warm water with a few drops of mild washing-up liquid for 15–20 minutes, then gently brush behind the diamond with a soft toothbrush, where oils collect. Rinse and dry with a lint-free cloth.
Can I shower or swim wearing my jewellery?+
It's best not to. Soap leaves a film that dulls stones, and chlorine in pools and hot tubs can damage plating and weaken gold over time.

With care, plating keeps its colour for a long time. Avoid perfume, lotions, chlorine and silver polishing cloths, and wipe pieces with a soft dry cloth after wearing.
